This course is taught based off of the San Jose Model (40 Hours) This 40-hour Basic Field Training Officer Certification Course is designed to prepare experienced law enforcement officers to effectively train, mentor, and evaluate newly hired personnel using the nationally recognized San Jose Model. Participants will gain the skills necessary to transition from line officer to field trainer, focusing on adult learning principles, communication techniques, and structured evaluation methods. Course topics include: the history and philosophy of the San Jose Model, roles and responsibilities of the FTO, standardized evaluation guidelines, documentation and report writing, legal and liability considerations, problem-solving strategies, ethical decision-making, and remedial training techniques. Practical exercises and scenario-based training reinforce classroom instruction to ensure participants can apply concepts in real-world settings. Upon successful completion, graduates will be certified to serve as Field Training Officers, equipped to guide probationary officers through a structured, fair, and defensible training process that enhances competency, professionalism, and public safety. Instructor: This course is led by Sean Farris, a seasoned law enforcement officer who brings real-world experience from every stage of the profession. From starting out in the dispatcher’s chair, to walking the beat as a rookie LEO, to leading as a law enforcement supervisor and mentor, Sean’s career offers an unmatched perspective.
