Minimum Requirements
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Must pass local comprehension/aptitude tests, practical exams, MMPI-2/CPI, or related psychological performance tests.
- Must be eligible for the Oklahoma Police Pension and Retirement System.
- Must be able to be eligible for and pass the Oklahoma Police Pension and Retirement System.
- Must be willing to work shift work that could include: nights, evenings, weekends, and some Holidays.
- Must be a resident of the State of Oklahoma and possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor of moral turpitude or have pending criminal actions, and have a clean driving record.
- Must not be a user of controlled substances.
- Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation.
Key Responsibilities
Police Officer is an entry-level position and must complete a probationary period, and complete both written and practical knowledge and field training under the direct supervision of a field training officer.
Salary/Compensation
The City of Altus is now paying a hiring incentive for new hires. $5,000 for Certified Officers with 2+ years and $2,500 for Uncertified Officers with less than 2 years of experience.
Starting pay for Uncertified Officers is $42,711. Starting pay for Certified Officers is dependent on experience, up to $47,770 (step 4). Additional pay incentives are also available for college degrees, bilingual speaking, etc.

The City of Altus is the County Seat of Jackson County, and is home to Altus Air Force Base. The Altus Police Department is budgeted for 42 fulltime officers and serves a supportive community of approximately 20,000 residents. The City of Altus is currently growing and expanding and is known as the “City with a Future to Share.”
Within the rank of Police Officer there are various assignments to a variety of functions. However, they are all Police Officers and subject to transfer based on the needs of service. These special assignments may include: Traffic, K9, Training, Narcotics, Investigations, Field Training Officer, and D.A.R.E. Officer.
The Altus Police Department provides uniforms, equipment, duty firearms, and a take home car (if your residence falls within department policy).
