The City of Owasso is accepting applications for three Police Officer positions at the Owasso Police Department, a department recognized as one of the premier law enforcement agencies to work for in Oklahoma.

Position

Police Officer (Full-Time; Non-Exempt)

Job Summary

Provides law enforcement services to the community within the mission, goals, and objectives of the agency, and in compliance with governing federal, state, and local laws. Responds to emergency calls, makes criminal and traffic related arrests, patrols neighborhoods and roads, and protects the life and property of the citizens. Performs a variety of public safety tasks in the performance of law enforcement.

Salary

$59,398 - $72,269 annual base pay depending on experience and education

· Plus education pay of $1200/year for an associate’s degree or $1500/year for a bachelor’s degree

· Plus holiday pay of 96 hours per year at regular pay rate

· $1,200/year uniform allowance after completion of probationary period

· Longevity pay commences at 5 years of service

· $1,000/year incentive for certified* police officers payable upon completion of probationary period, maximum of 5 years. *Certifications and years of experience are approved at the discretion of the Chief of Police

· $2,000 hiring incentive for fluent Spanish-speaking individuals, subject to department testing

· $3,000 hiring incentive for individuals who can speak, read, and write Spanish fluently, subject to department testing

Essential Functions

Operate a motor vehicle for routine patrol assignments and responding to the needs of the community

· Enforce state and federal laws and City ordinances

· Make arrests on criminal and traffic related offenses

· Operate two-way radios, vehicle and handheld types; radar equipment and Breathalyzer equipment

· Read, understand and interpret ordinances, laws and other operating procedures and communicate both orally and in writing

· Drive a vehicle safely and efficiently while under stress and while communicating on radio

· Deal effectively with others in both stressful and routine day to day situations

· Willingness to follow orders, and to work with others

· Maintain strict confidentiality

· Be honest in dealing with the public and obey all laws

· Work rotating shifts, holidays, weekend, and long hours as necessary

· Read and interpret maps and give directions as needed

· Handle emergency situations in a calm manner

· Perform all aspects of Community Policing

· Perform other duties as assigned, which include but are not limited to: investigation of crime scenes, preservation and collection of evidence, preparation of handwritten and typed reports, oral testimony in courts of law, investigation of traffic accidents, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have High School Diploma or GED equivalent

· Must be between the ages of 21 and 45, unless a current participant in the Oklahoma Police Pension system

· Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License which has not been suspended or revoked in the past five years and no more than 3 or more moving violations in the past three years

· Must not have been convicted of domestic abuse or be listed as a defendant on a protective order

· Must not have been convicted of a felony crime or have any pending criminal actions

· Must not have used marijuana within the last year

· Must not have used steroids within the last three (3) years

· Must not have used any other illicit drugs within the last five (5) years

· Must not have been convicted of alcohol related driving offense or crime of moral turpitude

· Must be able to pass physical agility test, written test and oral examinations, undergo an extensive background investigation, polygraph exam, MMPI or related psychological examination, Police Pension Board Physical and drug screening

· Must successfully complete a basic Police Academy as taught by the Council on Law Enforcement Education & Training (CLEET) and written, practical and field exercises under the direct supervision of a Field Training Officer during the first twelve (12) months of the probationary period.

· Successful candidates will be required to undergo and successfully pass an annual physical agility exam as a condition of their employment.

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are ideal, but are not required.

· Any combination of CLEET Certification, college credit hours, military experience and/or experience as a police officer
