Complaint Information and Procedures

What this Board does: The Oklahoma State Board of Behavioral Health Licensure (BBHL) oversees three types of licensed professionals:

  • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC)
  • Licensed Marital and Family Therapists (LMFT)
  • Licensed Behavioral Practitioners (LBP)

Two things you can do on the Board's site:

  1. Look up a licensee – check if someone is licensed and under this Board's authority: Licensee Search
  2. File a complaint (Request for Inquiry) – report concerns about a license candidate or current license holder: Request for Inquiry

Important limitation: This Board only oversees individual license holders — not facilities or agencies. Depending on the type of facility, complaints go elsewhere:

  • In-patient medical facilities → Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH).
  • Out-patient behavioral health agencies → Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS).

Wrong professional type? Here's where to go instead:

  • Medical doctors → Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision.
  • Social workers → Oklahoma State Board of Licensed Social Workers (LCSW).
  • Alcohol and drug counselors → Oklahoma State Board of Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors (LADC).
  • Psychologists → Oklahoma Board Examiners of Psychologist.

Recommendation: Before filing a complaint, make sure you're contacting the right board — it depends on whether you're dealing with an individual professional (and which type) or a facility/agency.
