Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs Mourns the Loss of Pioneer Dr. Stephen Grissom

OKLAHOMA CITY, JAN 14, 2025 — The Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs (OJA) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Stephen Grissom. Dr. Grissom was first appointed to both the OJA Board and State Advisory Group in 2017 after years of service as OJA’s Chief Psychologist. He dedicated decades of his life to improving outcomes for Oklahoma’s youth.
Dr. Grissom’s commitment to juvenile justice reform and his profound understanding of adolescent development made him an invaluable leader in our mission to rehabilitate and empower the state’s most vulnerable young people. His service on the OJA Board spanned many years, during which he offered wise counsel, innovative ideas, and compassionate advocacy for systemic change.
“Dr. Grissom’s legacy is one of transformation and hope,” said OJA Executive Director Timothy Tardibono. “He believed in the potential of every young person, regardless of their circumstances, and his work has left an indelible mark on our agency and the lives of countless youth and families. Additionally, Dr. Grissom’s work as a professor has touched numerous students that are now professionals carrying on his pioneering spirit to provide excellent care for Oklahoma’s youth.”
As Chief Psychologist for OJA, Dr. Grissom played a critical role in advancing trauma-informed care practices and implementing evidence-based strategies to address the complex needs of justice-involved youth. His leadership and expertise elevated the standard of care and underscored the importance of addressing mental health and behavioral challenges as part of holistic rehabilitation.
Dr. Grissom’s colleagues remember him not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his warm and generous spirit. He was a mentor, a visionary, and a friend to all who shared his commitment to bettering the lives of Oklahoma’s youth.
OJA extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Grissom’s family, friends, students, and all who were touched by his life and work. Plans for a memorial or celebration of life will be shared in coordination with his loved ones.
To honor Dr. Grissom’s legacy, OJA is exploring ways to continue his advocacy for mental health services and juvenile justice reform through new initiatives and programs that reflect his values and vision.
