Additional I-35 lane closures near Wayne continue through early 2022

Sunday, June 06, 2021

This project is weather permitting:

I-35 will be narrowed to one lane in each direction between SH-59 (mm 86) and two miles south of SH-59 (mm 84) near Wayne in McClain County beginning Monday, June 7 and continuing through early 2022 for pavement rehabilitation. All lanes will be open Oct. 8 through Oct. 10 for the University of Oklahoma’s Red River Showdown football game in Texas. Work will resume the following week and I-35 will remain narrowed until the project is completed.

This work zone is adjacent to nearby construction to the south between SH-145 near Paoli and SH-19 in Pauls Valley, which is being performed by the same construction contractor with both projects set up to run concurrently through early 2022.

Motorists must pay extra attention to traffic signs in the work zone, which include variable speed limit signs and a dynamic Zipper Merge that will change depending on current traffic conditions and congestion.

Major congestion and very lengthy traffic backups can be expected on I-35 between Purcell and Wynnewood, especially during peak trael times. Drivers are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and use alternate routes, such as US-81 to the west or US-69/75 to the east. Traffic maps and other resources are available to the public through the free Drive Oklahoma smart phone app or at www.oktraffic.org.

The Oklahoma Transportation Commission awarded the more than $12 million contract for this work to IHC Scott Inc., of Englewood, Colo.
