OYAC Frequently Asked Questions

The Oklahoma Youth Advisory Council (OYAC) is a group of young people with lived experience who provide feedback and recommendations to help improve mental health programs, services, and policies across Oklahoma. OYAC is convened by the Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth (OCCY).

No. You do not need professional experience or formal training. Your lived experience and perspective as a young person are what matter most.

That’s okay. Many youth feel nervous at first. OYAC meetings are facilitated to be respectful and supportive, and no one is required to speak publicly if they are not comfortable doing so. Public speaking opportunities may be available, but are optional.

No one is required to share anything they are not comfortable sharing. Members are encouraged to share at a level that feels safe for them.

OYAC typically meets once per month, with a total time commitment of up to 4 hours per month. Meeting length and format will be shared in advance.

Meetings may be held virtually, in person, or in a hybrid format, depending on the activity. Details will be shared with members in advance.

Yes. OYAC members are paid $30 per hour, up to 4 hours per month, subject to available funding, through OCCY’s payment process.

Payment is processed after participation in meetings or activities. Payment is processed through OCCY’s standard payment process. While timelines can vary, payments may take up to 45 days after participation. OCCY will share payment timelines during onboarding and provide support if any questions arise.

Compensation may be considered taxable income. OCCY will provide general information during onboarding, but members are encouraged to consult a trusted adult or tax professional if they have questions.

OYAC members serve a one-year term. Continued participation beyond the initial term is not guaranteed and depends on eligibility (including age), participation, and ongoing program needs. Term details and expectations will be shared during the application and onboarding process.

Members receive orientation, ongoing facilitation, and support throughout their participation. OCCY staff are available to answer questions and help ensure a positive, meaningful experience.

Yes. Many youth have experience with more than one program, service, or support. These areas may include foster care, housing instability, school supports, or other services. All relevant lived experiences are welcome.

OYAC is committed to accessibility. Accommodations and support can be requested during the application or at any time during participation.
