Oklahoma Poetry Out Loud Winner Meets with Congresswoman Bice in D.C.

Thursday, June 04, 2026

Oklahoma's high school winner of the state Poetry Out Loud contest not only recently received an expenses-paid trip to compete in the national finals in Washington, D.C., she had the unique opportunity to meet with Oklahoma Congresswoman Stephanie Bice during her trip.

A student at Bethany High School, Wheatley won the state competition in March. After learning Wheatley would be representing Oklahoma, the Congresswoman invited Wheatley to visit with her in her office. The meeting took place April 30. It was one of the many perks Wheatley received as a result of her participation in Poetry Out Loud.

Next fall, high schools across the stage can register to give their students a chance to participate in the program. Winners from individual schools participate in the state finals in the spring, with cash prizes given for the top winners and their schools. Designed to teach students about literary heritage while helping them master public speaking skills, the recitation contest is a National Endowment of the Arts program. The state competition was organized by Oklahoma A+ Schools in partnership with the Oklahoma Arts Council.
