2019 data from the American Community Survey / U.S. Census

Statistics include noninstitutionalized Oklahomans based on 2019 data calculated by the Cornell University Yang Tan Institute using the U.S. Census Bureau's 2019 American Community Survey (ACS) Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) data.

The Prevalence of Disability in Oklahoma

  • Oklahoma population: 3,894,800
  • 614,800 Oklahomans or 15.8% – more than one in six - have disabilities.  
  • 194,000 Oklahomans, all ages, or 5.0% have hearing disabilities.  
  • 128,900 Oklahomans, all ages, or 3.3% have vision disabilities.
  • 318,700 Oklahomans, all ages, or 8.7% have ambulatory disabilities.
  • 222,800 Oklahomans, all ages, or 6.1% have cognitive disabilities.
  • 108,400 Oklahomans, all ages, or 3.0% have self-care disabilities.
  • 212,300 Oklahomans, all ages, or 6.8% have independent living disabilities.
  • 244,600 or 40.1% of Oklahomans age 65 and over have disabilities (not counting persons living in nursing homes or other institutions.)

Sex

  • 16% of males, all ages, races, ethnicities and education levels, or 306,100 persons reported a disability.

  • 15.6% of females, all ages, races, ethnicities and education levels, or 308,700 persons reported a disability
     

Employment

  • 14.4% of work-age Oklahomans, ages 21-64, or 312,900 persons have disabilities.

  • 40% of work-age Oklahomans, ages 21-64, or 125,100 persons with disabilities were employed. 

  • 40% of Oklahomans with disabilities, ages 21-64, were employed, compared to 79.2% of persons without disabilities.
     

Annual Income/Federal Poverty Level

  • $38,400 is the median annual earnings of Oklahomans with disabilities, ages 21-64, working full-time/full-year, compared to $43,800 for workers without disabilities.

  • 27.7% of Oklahomans with disabilities, ages 21-64, had incomes below the federal poverty level, compared to 12.1% of persons without disabilities.
     

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

  • 17.3% of Oklahomans with disabilities, ages 21 to 64, or 54,200 persons received SSI benefits.

Veterans

  • 35.8% of civilian veterans, ages 21-64, have incomes below the federal poverty level compared to 12.1% of persons without disabilities.
