To the Citizens of Oklahoma:

Notice is hereby given that the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services for the Oklahoma School for the Deaf is submitting an application to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for a Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) award.

SULPHUR - History was made in an 1894 football game at Washington D.C.’s Gallaudet University, which is a college for students who are Deaf and hard of hearing.

Gallaudet’s quarterback Paul D. Hubbard did not want the opposing players from the other Deaf team to see him communicating plays during the game. To prevent this, he asked the Gallaudet players on the field to form a tight circle so he could speak with his teammates in American Sign Language without the other team seeing. This became known as a huddle.

MUSKOGEE -- Oklahoma School for the Blind will host the 13^th annual Oklahoma Regional Cane Quest with 46 students who are blind or visually impaired ready to prove their white cane proficiency. This competition will begin at noon on Nov. 5 at the school.

Contestants, with white canes, will identify obstacles and changes in surfaces, such as drop-offs at stairs or curbs, in a quest for medals and prizes.

MUSKOGEE -- Oklahoma School for the Blind students will learn to importance of living a drug-free life during Red Ribbon Week, which will be held Oct. 27 to Oct. 30.

Red Ribbon Week is aimed at helping students understand the dangers of drugs. It presents an opportunity for parents, educators and communities to reienforce messages with their students throughout the year.

MUSKOGEE – Spaghetti and meatballs will be top of menu on Oct. 7 for a fundraising dinner that will benefit the Oklahoma School for the Blind.

The public is invited to attend from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the OSB campus in the new gym. The school is located at 3300 Gibson Street in Muskogee.

OKLAHOMA CITY — It’s always exciting when an individual finds employment. It’s no different for a person with a disability. The difference lies in the barriers that can make it difficult for people with disabilities to find work.

In 2024, 1,045 Oklahomans with disabilities went to work thanks to the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services’ Vocational Rehabilitation and the Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired employment programs.

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Accessible Instructional Materials Center is working to ensure that print-disabled students across Oklahoma have what they need to succeed in their classrooms as they return to school this fall.

The AIM Center, which is part of the Oklahoma Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, provides free specialized school supplies for students who are blind, have visual impairments, have certain physical handicaps or have reading disabilities. 

OKLAHOMA CITY —A new program designed to help clients who are visually impaired find employment kicks off this fall. It’s called Employment VIBE and is part of the Visually Impaired and Blindness Empowerment program or VIBE. The program is offered by the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services.

“This program is for clients ages 18 and up,” said Cheryl Snow, programs manager in DRS’ division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired. “We will kick start Employment VIBE in the fall, and it’s specifically for clients who have already learned adaptive skills and are ready for employment.”
