Friday, November 22, 2024

SULPHUR, Okla.- Oklahoma School for the Deaf won the Great Plains Schools for the Deaf football championship for the third year in a row.

“This incredible achievement is a testament to the hard work, determination, and talent of our athletes,” OSD Superintendent Heather Laine said.

OSD’s football team plays eight-man football and competes against schools for the deaf from other states and public-school districts in this state.

“A huge shoutout to our 1st-year head coach, Sean Thomas Sledd and his coaching team for leading the team to success and continuing this winning journey. Your leadership and dedication have made all the difference,” Laine said.

In addition to sports including football, basketball, volleyball, track and golf, OSD clubs and organizations include academic teams, Key Club, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, competitive math and reading teams, gymnastics, art club, National Honor Society and cheerleading.

“As a Deaf school, we are committed to providing every student with the same opportunities and experiences found in public schools. We provide full communication access through American Sign Language (ASL), ensuring that every student can participate in classroom discussions, school events, and interactions with peers and faculty. We believe that every student deserves an equal chance to succeed and enjoy their high school years, regardless of hearing ability,” Laine said.

As the state resource center on Deafness, OSD has more than a 100-year history of providing educational resources to deaf and hard of hearing students, birth through 12th grade, throughout the state of Oklahoma. The school serves students at the main campus in Sulphur and one preschool program for ages 3 through 5 at University of Science and Arts Oklahoma in Chickasha.

OSD is a division of the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services.
