Protecting Your EBT Benefits
Benefits are being targeted by fraud in a few different ways:
- Cloning: Duplicating card number and PIN information to create a counterfeit card.
- Skimming: Placing skimmer devices on point of sale machines to capture card and PIN information.
- Phishing: Calls, texts, or emails requesting card, PIN, or personal information.
Once a card number is known, an easy to guess PIN can be used to gain access to the benefits.
To protect against this kind of fraud, it’s crucial to use a hard to guess PIN, the Additional Security Password, and the Lock Card feature. Using all of these features together is the best way to protect your benefits.
A hard to guess PIN makes it very difficult to randomly select a correct PIN.
The Lock Card (Outside of State or Everywhere) feature protects the card from unauthorized transactions but does not affect the case status. It temporarily restricts use of the card for either purchases outside of Oklahoma only or all purchases. The card can be locked or unlocked through the ConnectEBT portal or mobile app.
The Additional Security Password feature protects against automated programs by blocking unauthorized users from accessing the account or balance through the phone system. This is a passcode set up through OKDHS – not Conduent. This 6-digit passcode is required before using the phone system, talking to a customer service representative with Conduent, or using the ConnectEBT app.
