Summary

Looking for an attainable New Year's resolution? Look no further than preparedness! There are many simple steps you and your family can take to be a little more #ReadyOK this year. 

This toolkit was released in celebration of New Year 2025, and aimed to encourage Oklahomans to make any aspect of individual and household preparedness their resolution. This campaign reviewed the major themes focused on in the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management's 12 Ways to Prepare Campaign in 2024, including making a plan, making an emergency kit and getting involved in community.

3. Make a Plan

Get a clue! 🧐 What are YOU going to do when disaster strikes? Resolve to #MakeaPlan for your family in emergencies this year: 

+Learn the dangers likely in your area and best safety practices 

+Discuss how you’ll respond to each; include provisions for communication issues, power outages and personal injuries  

+Tailor your plans to the specific needs of your family - you most likely won’t be all together when disaster strikes

4. Save for Emergencies

5. Practice Emergency Drills

6. Test Family Communication Plan

Your family most likely won’t be all together when disaster strikes 🫤👎 How are you going to get in touch if cell towers are overloaded?

+ Text, don’t talk

+ Choose an out-of-state contact for all family members to call or text if separated during an emergency

+ Have two meeting places– one near your home and one outside your neighborhood

+ Memorize and write down the phone numbers of your family members/emergency contacts and store copies in emergency kits

7. Safeguard Documents

10. Know Evacuation Routes

11. Assemble or Update Supplies

An easy way to #ResolvetoBeReady this year is to #AssembleorUpdateSupplies! Keep these items on hand in case of emergency: 

+ 3-day supply of water (1 gallon per person per day)

+ 3-5 days of nonperishable food (w/ manual can opener)

+ first aid kit w/ prescription medications

12. Get Involved in Community
