Plans for a bridge rehabilitation project on eastbound and westbound I-40 over I-44 are underway. Beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, crews will start preliminary work under the I-40 bridges which will necessitate construction vehicles entering and exiting the interstates. After Feb. 3, this work will take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, through February. Although lanes will not be narrowed initially, drivers should use caution in the area and allow extra travel time.
In early March, drivers can expect I-40 to narrow nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. while rehabilitation begins on the driving lanes and ramps. I-40 ramps to I-44 will be intermittently closed. However, two lanes in each direction will be open during the day. Notices will be sent as the project progresses, and message boards will be in place to warn motorists of these changes. The project is estimated to be completed by early fall. Drivers should locate an alternate route now or expect delays.
This $12 million, six-month bridge rehabilitation project was awarded to Built Right Construction at the October 2024 Oklahoma Transportation Commission meeting. An I-40/I-44 interchange reconstruction project is currently in the design phase and is tentatively scheduled in ODOT's Eight-Year Construction Work Plan for 2031.
