Drivers urged to use caution as traffic adjusts to new alignment

Drivers should be aware of a new traffic configuration beginning Thursday morning at the I-35/SH-9W interchange between Norman and Goldsby with the opening of Oklahoma's third diverging diamond interchange. SH-9W will be closed over I-35 from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday to complete striping and facilitate the change in traffic flow. Drivers will still be able to enter and exit I-35. By 6 a.m. Thursday:

  • SH-9W traffic will be in its opposite flow DDI alignment.
  • Eastbound SH-9W will be narrowed through October. Various overnight lane closures will continue in the area through November as the project progresses.
  • The new southbound I-35 off-ramp to NW 12th Ave./Lamar Rd. is anticipated to open in December.
  • The area remains an active construction zone through early 2026.

Drivers should use caution as they enter the reconfigured interchange and pay extra attention to all traffic control devices, including new traffic signals, pavement markings and signage as well as follow the speed limit. Motorists are urged to use caution as traffic adjusts to the new interchange layout.

Here are several safety tips to consider before driving through the new diverging diamond interchange:

  • As you approach the interchange, drive for the conditions by following the speed limit. Pay attention to traffic control devices and pavement markings.
  • As you enter the interchange, follow the signs, signals and pavement markings to cross through the intersection at the first set of traffic lights. Traffic will appear as if on a one-way street as it crosses over the bridge.
  • Vehicles continuing straight on SH-9W after crossing bridge simply proceed through a second set of traffic lights back to the right side of the roadway.
SH-9W will be reconfigured as a Diverging Diamond Interchange beginning Thursday, Oct. 16
