Project Description

ODOT is updating the Oklahoma Route 66 Roadbed Documentation Project (1926-1970): A Survey of Roadbed and Integral Structures completed in 2002 (2002 Project). The 2002 Project identified 114 properties in three categories. The three categories include the following:

  • Roadbed segments
  • Bridges and culverts
  • Roadside parks and markers

The 2002 Project (see web link above) provides descriptions and maps showing the locations of these properties. In addition to the 114 properties in the 2002 Project, additional bridges and roadbed segments that were not included in the 2002 Project will be included in the current project.

The goal of the current project is to document these properties on State Historic Preservation Office Historic Preservation Resource Identification forms, provide supplemental guidance to the Multiple Property Documentation Form (MPDF) Route 66 and Associated Historic Resources in Oklahoma (1995) and the 2003 amendment to the original MPDF, and evaluate each property for eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

As part of the current project, ODOT is soliciting information on roadbed segments, bridges and culverts, and roadside parks and markers not included in the 2002 Survey. Please provide the name, location and any additional information at the link below. (Please note that roadside architecture - such as motels, restaurants, and gas stations - are not included in this project. Roadside architecture was identified in another survey the Final Survey Report for the Oklahoma Route 66 Historic Resources Survey 1926-1970 (completed in 2002.)

Public involvement meetings and documentation will take place in early 2022 and the project will be completed in fall of 2023. Check back for dates, times and locations.
