Norman residents and officials turned out Friday, July 21, to be the first to walk across the I-35 Lindsey St. bridge before it opened to traffic after a two-year construction project. This is the fourth Single Point Urban Interchange built in Oklahoma and it's now the widest bridge in the state.

The I-35 interchange at Lindsey St. was reconstructed as a Single Point Urban Interchange. The SPUI design allows large volumes of traffic and various turning movements to navigate the interchange efficiently.
The $71 million project reconstructed and widened I-35 to six lanes from south of Main St. to the South Canadian River in Norman.
A major project to widen I-35 and reconstruct the interchanges
at SH-9 East and Lindsey St. in Norman started in March 2015.
About the Project
- $71 million contract plus nearly $2 million in possible financial incentives for early completion
- Awarded to Sherwood Construction Co. of Tulsa
- Work started in March 2015 and is expected to take about two years to complete
Work Includes
- Reconstruction of the north half of the I-35/SH-9 East interchange with new ramps and connect Ed Noble Parkway from Lindsey St. to SH-9 East
- Reconstruction of the I-35/Lindsey St. interchange as a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) similar to the new Main St. interchange, which features longer on- and off-ramps at I-35, a wider bridge and single array of traffic signals on top of the bridge to allow large volumes of traffic to negotiate the area
- Widening of I-35 to six lanes from south of Main St. to the South Canadian River, completing the widening of I-35 between Oklahoma City and Norman
- The City of Norman is partnering with ODOT to construct a drainage structure and add artwork and landscaping to the new Lindsey St. bridge to reflect the Cherokee Gothic style of architecture at the University of Oklahoma
Impact to Traffic
- Two lanes of northbound and southbound I-35 will remain open to traffic in each direction during construction, as well as most on- and off-ramps; however, some nighttime lane and ramp closures will be necessary
- Drivers can expect congestion and delays, especially during morning and evening rush hour. Drivers should consider using US-77 and SH-77H (Sooner Rd.) as detour routes.
