Plan Ahead for I-35 Corridor Construction and Delays, Consider Alternate Route

Drivers should plan ahead for lane and ramp closures along the I-35 corridor due to highway work at the following locations, detailed below.

***Expect significant delays, especially during weekends and holidays, and plan extra travel time or use an alternate route.***

Suggested Alternate Routes

  • US-81 to the west, which runs from Fort Worth, Texas through Duncan, Chickasha, El Reno and Enid to Wichita, Kan.
  • US-69/75 to the east, which runs from Dallas, Texas to the Tulsa area and to I-44/Will Rogers Turnpike at Big Cabin, providing access to Joplin, Mo. and Kansas City

I-35 Resurfacing between Blackwell and Tonkawa – Kay Co.

Impact to Traffic

  • Northbound and southbound I-35 will be intermittently narrowed to one lane between just north of SH-11 (mm 223) near Blackwell and just south of US-60 (mm 213) near Tonkawa through fall 2023.
  • The speed limit is reduced in the work zone.

 About the Project

  • The nearly $7 million contract was awarded to Haskell Lemon Construction, of Oklahoma City.
  • The project includes resurfacing of nearly 11 miles of asphalt pavement on I-35.
  • Work is expected to be completed in fall 2023.

 

I-35 BRIDGE RECONSTRUCTION AT US-60 NEAR TONKAWA – KAY CO.

Impact to Traffic

  • Northbound and southbound I-35 will be narrowed to one lane in each direction over the Salt Fork Arkansas River between US-60 (mm 214) near Tonkawa and SH-15 (mm 203) in Kay County through fall 2023.
  • Eastbound and westbound US-60 is narrowed to one lane in each direction underneath I-35.
  • The speed limit is reduced in the work zone.

 About the Project

  • The nearly $2 million contract was awarded to Logos Construction Co. LLC, of Sapulpa.
  • The work is focused on repairing the substructures of the bridges and bridge joints. While the work may not be visible to motorists at times, the lane closures are necessary to help protect crews and equipment working underneath the bridge.
  • Work is expected to be completed in fall 2023.

I-35 BRIDGE RECONSTRUCTION AT N. 63RD ST. NEAR I-44 IN OKLAHOMA CITY - OKLAHOMA CO.

Impact to Traffic

  • Starting Jan. 23, 2023, northbound and southbound I-35 will be narrowed to two lanes in each direction between N. 50th St. (mm 132A) and Wilshire Blvd. (mm 134) for bridge reconstruction at N. 63rd St. (mm 133) in Oklahoma City.
  • Westbound I-44 will be narrowed to one lane from Wilshire Blvd. (mm 134) to Martin Luther King Ave. (mm 129);
  • The westbound I-44 Service Rd. will be closed between just south of N.E. 71st St. and N. Miramar Blvd. through spring 2023; and
  • Eastbound and westbound N. 63rd St. will be narrowed to one lane in each direction between Bean Blossom Dr. and Bryant Ave. Motorists can expect this section of N. 63rd St. to be closed later in the project. During the closure, motorists may use Bryant Ave. and Martin Luther King Ave. as alternate routes.
  • Drivers can expect lane shifts and narrowed lane widths as well as some short-term full closures at various times during the project for bridge demolition and bridge beam installation.
  • The speed limit is reduced in the work zone.  

About the Project

  • The project reconstructs the northbound and southbound I-35 bridges over N. 63rd St. (mm 133).
  • This project also includes a northbound I-35 to westbound I-44 flyover ramp that will be a right exit and a new eastbound I-44 to southbound I-35 ramp.   
  • This work is in preparation for a future project that will complete the I-44/I-35 interchange reconstruction, which will include a new eastbound I-44 to northbound I-35 movement.
  • The more than $66 million contract was awarded to Manhattan Road & Bridge Company of Tulsa.
  • All work is expected to be completed in spring 2025.

SOUTHBOUND I-35 BRIDGE RECONSTRUCTION OVER sh-77d NEAR Davis/TUrner Falls - Murray Co.

About the Project

  • This project includes reconstruction of the southbound I-35 bridge over SH-77D in the Turner Falls area near Davis.
  • Southbound I-35 will be open to two lanes, however, drivers can expect lane shifts and narrowed lane widths.
  • The more than $6 million contract was awarded to Frontier Bridge, of Okarche.
    The project is estimated for completion in Summer 2023.

I-35 RECONSTRUCTION AT SH-7 NEAR DAVIS – GARVIN CO.

Impact to Traffic

  • Northbound I-35 is narrowed to one lane between SH-7 (mm 55) near Davis and West Ave. (mm 70) south of Pauls Valley through spring 2023.
  • Northbound I-35 will be opened to two lanes, but lanes will be shifted by summer 2023 through early 2024.
  • The speed limit is reduced in the work zone.

 About the Project

  • The $30 million contract was awarded to Duit Construction Co. LLC.
  • Work will upgrade aged pavement and improve driving conditions.
  • Work is expected to be completed in early 2024.

I-35 over US-77 and BNSF railroad at mile marker 8 between Thackerville and Marietta in Love County

  • This $32 million project is replacing the I-35 bridges over US-77 and the BNSF Railroad. It was awarded to C3 Construction, of Ada.
  • Two lanes are open in each direction with occasional narrowing or shifting of lanes.
  • Estimated completion in late spring 2023.

I-35 expansion from north of Texas state line north 2 miles near Thackerville

  • Additional lanes are being added south of Thackerville between US-77 North and Winstar Blvd./Rogers Rd. (mm 3).
  • I-35 remains two lanes in each direction while under construction. Estimated completion late Spring ’23.
  • This widening project will connect with an upcoming partnership project by the Texas Department of Transportation, the Chickasaw Nation and ODOT to widen I-35 from Gainesville across the Red River to US-77 North (mm 1) near Thackerville. This will replace bridges and better straighten the alignment.
  • The more than $11 million contract was awarded to C3 Construction, of Ada. The Chickasaw Nation provided $1 million toward the cost of construction.
  • ODOT’s Eight-Year Construction Work Plan includes funding to begin right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation for future I-35 widening between Thackerville and Marietta. Reconstruction of the I-35 interchange at SH-153 in Thackerville is also tentatively scheduled in the Eight-Year Plan for 2027.
  • Future projects featured in the Eight-Year Construction Work Plan 
    • I-35 from the Texas state line north 1 mile to mm 1, money only, TXDOT participation, FFY 2023, $34 million
    • I-35, SH-153 bridge over I-35 reconstruction and interchange 5.3 miles north of Texas state line, FFY 2027, $12 million
    • I-35 reconstruct to 6 lanes from mm 3.2 north to mm 4.7, FFY 2027, $7.5 million
    • I-35 reconstruct to 6 lanes from mm 5.7 to mm 7.7, FFY 2027, $8 million
    • I-35 reconstruct to 6 lanes from mm 8.3 to 11.3, FFY 2030, $15 million
