ODOT begins statewide Route 66 pavement marking project
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, launched a new statewide pavement marking project along historic U.S. Route 66 Monday morning. Serving as a tribute to the historical route that helped shape Oklahoma’s story and America’s journey west, the project will enhance on-the-ground visibility of the iconic corridor ahead of the Centennial celebration for the many travelers expected to make the drive this year.
The project is set to install 100 official Route 66 pavement markings at 50 locations statewide. Each site will feature the recognizable Route 66 badge and will be customized to reflect its specific community, with the location name prominently displayed in the top bar of the emblem.
Work began this week in Bristow and continue across the state, with completion anticipated by the end of April, weather permitting. Both Oklahoma City and Tulsa will have four marking locations each, with additional sites distributed along the Route 66 corridor statewide.
The total cost of the project is $341,000, with the majority of funding made possible through a 2024 grant from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce. An additional $91,000 contribution from ODOT helped bring the project to completion.
Communities interested in additional Route 66 pavement markings beyond the 50 selected locations may apply through a designated submission form (HERE). Approved applicants will be responsible for funding the cost of any additional markings.
Motorists are advised to be mindful of temporary lane closures or minor traffic delays while crews complete the pavement installations. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, remain alert, and use caution in work zones to ensure the safety of both workers and fellow travelers.
This initiative represents a coordinated effort to create consistent, high-visibility Route 66 identifiers across Oklahoma, in which the state has the most driveable miles of the iconic corridor, reinforcing the State’s critical presence for residents and visitors alike.
