The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is asking the public to provide input on the future of transportation across the state. The new edition of the Long-Range Transportation Plan evaluates long-term trends, community needs and emerging technologies to establish transportation priorities through 2050.
This federally required plan establishes a comprehensive vision for Oklahoma’s transportation future, guiding the development of a multimodal network that ensures safe, efficient and reliable transportation options for every Oklahoman.
“Our goal is to create a safety-centric transportation system that works for every Oklahoman, whether you're commuting to work, shipping freight or accessing essential services,” said ODOT Executive Director Tim Gatz. “The public's voice has shaped this draft and we’re asking for feedback again to make sure we’re moving in the right direction.”
The plan is designed to outline high-level policy goals for all modes of transportation, including highways; public transit; freight and passenger rail; bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure; ports and waterways and airport access. The plan will serve as a framework for investment decisions and is updated every five years. By setting these long-term priorities, ODOT aims to create a more efficient transportation network that will adapt to the evolving needs of Oklahomans and support future growth statewide.
ODOT began working on this plan in late 2024 and public comment collected has helped identify key priorities such as:
- Maintaining and modernizing existing infrastructure
- Improving safety
- Expanding multimodal options
- Preparing for future shifts like automation and climate resilience.
That feedback, along with technical analysis and agency coordination, informed the strategies outlined in the draft.
“Transportation planning is about more than roads, it’s about connecting communities and creating a foundation for economic opportunity and quality of life,” said ODOT Deputy Director Dawn Sullivan. “We appreciate Oklahomans taking the time to share their thoughts with us.”
The public is encouraged to view the plan and leave comments through Monday Aug. 11, 2025, at www.oklongrangeplan.org. Responses will be used to refine the plan before it is adopted by ODOT. Following adoption, the plan will be submitted to the Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration.
