Thursday, May 08, 2025

The Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth honored three individuals Wednesday, April 30, during the 2025 Oklahoma Parent Leadership Awards. The ceremony was in conjunction with the annual Oklahoma Child Abuse Prevention Awards.

The event recognized parents whose leadership and service have significantly contributed to the well-being of children and families throughout the state.

The Parent Leadership Awards celebrate parents' essential role in strengthening families and improving the systems that support children. Honorees were selected for their commitment to community engagement, advocacy, sharing resources, and providing direct support to fellow caregivers.

"These parents have shown how one person's dedication can make a difference in an entire community," said James Ray, chair of the OCCY Parent Partnership Board. "We're proud to honor the hard work and the positive impact they create every day."

Yolanda Galloway
Nominated by Shannon Luper

Yolanda Galloway of Tulsa exemplifies resilience and service. After reuniting with her children through the Girl Scouts Beyond Bars program, she worked to rebuild her life, earning an expungement, restoring her family, and returning to the workforce. She now serves as a program coordinator with Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma, connecting families with critical resources including housing, employment and child development programs. Her work empowers parents to strengthen their households and build long-term stability.

Marques S. Thomas
Nominated by Delena Sullivan

Marques Thomas has served on the Wynnewood school board since 2014 and is a 17-year Wynnewood Volunteer Fire Department member. His leadership spans multiple community initiatives, including the Back to School Bash and Vision 2025 service projects. Thomas is known for mentoring youth through sports and leading local fundraising efforts. His ongoing presence and service reflect a deep commitment to supporting children and families.

Erica Herrera
Nominated by Isela Perez

Erica Herrera has had a lasting impact on families across Oklahoma through her innovative outreach. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she launched Café con Erica, a virtual support space for families facing isolation. She later founded OKMAMA, a peer network for Spanish-speaking mothers of children with chronic illnesses. Through these efforts, Herrera has created trusted spaces where parents can share experiences, find resources, and build meaningful support networks. Her leadership continues to strengthen community ties statewide.

The awards ceremony underscored the importance of parents as partners in improving outcomes for children through collaboration with local services and community networks.

"Awards like this are about more than just recognition," said Isabel Rodriguez, community planner for OCCY's Parent Leadership Programs. "They highlight the dedication of parents who lead with heart, determination, and a strong commitment to making life better for all children."
