Luann Schmiedel has been appointed to serve as the commissioner representing parents of children with special needs on the Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth. She succeeds Angela Donley and brings decades of leadership experience and a strong commitment to improving outcomes for children, youth and families across Oklahoma.

“What makes OCCY strong is the diversity of experience and insight each commissioner brings to the table,” said Annette Wisk Jacobi, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth. “Luann Schmiedel brings a heart for service and a proven dedication to helping children and families.”

Schmiedel is a recognized community leader with a long-standing focus on youth development, family support and community empowerment. Through her leadership at Oklahoma’s Credit Union and in partnership with the Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth, she has supported initiatives aimed at reducing barriers to financial independence for vulnerable youth. These efforts have expanded access to banking services and financial education for homeless youth and those aging out of foster care, helping to address a critical gap in Oklahoma’s child-serving system.

“I am honored to serve alongside others dedicated to the well-being of Oklahoma’s children and families,” Schmiedel said. “This work is deeply personal to me, and I am committed to helping build systems that are responsive, compassionate, and community-focused.”

Beyond her professional career, Schmiedel has led programs such as Sugar and Spurs, which raises funds for the Children’s Health Foundation, and has supported employment efforts for low-income youth through the nonprofit Sasquatch Shaved Ice. Her community involvement reflects OCCY’s mission to empower families, strengthen neighborhoods, and promote child well-being through meaningful collaboration and oversight.
