In the spirit of National Foster Care Awareness Month, Dr. Kalie Kerth, a dedicated foster parent, and OCCY Commissioner, shares her profound journey through the world of foster care. Over the past eight years, her family has opened their home to 44 children, providing a nurturing environment for those most in need. Their dedication doesn't stop at just providing a roof; they maintain lasting connections with their "bonus babies," cherishing the opportunity to see them grow and flourish.

Dr. Kerth explains that becoming a foster family stemmed from a desire to support families facing challenges. "Our motivation was to help stand in the gap for families in need," she states. This commitment has enriched the lives of numerous children and deepened her understanding of family and community dynamics.

Dr. Kerth offers invaluable insight for those considering the path of foster care: "Remember that these children do have families—parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, and uncles. They need a home, a safe place, and a family to love and care for them unconditionally, regardless of how long or short that time may be in your home." As foster parents, their role is to act as a bridge, helping children either return to their biological parents or transition towards adoption when reunification isn't possible.

The experience has expanded her view of what it means to support a child in need. Foster care for Dr. Kerth and her family includes embracing not only the children but also their biological families. "We attend court hearings, write letters to incarcerated parents, drive them to work and meetings, and invite them to sit with us at church and join us for dinner," she shares. This holistic approach fosters healing and support for the children and their entire families.

However, the journey is not without its challenges. Dr. Kerth advises potential foster families to be prepared for a long road filled with unexpected twists and turns. "Build your network, know your limitations, and ask for help," she advises. This support network is crucial in navigating the complex landscape of foster care.

As National Foster Care Awareness Month unfolds, Dr. Kerth's story highlights foster families' crucial role in bridging gaps within communities, reinforcing the idea that fostering is not just about caring for a child but healing and supporting entire families. It's a reminder of the powerful impact compassion and commitment can have on society's most vulnerable.
