Rates & Fees
The Oklahoma Corporation Commission is responsible for all rates and fees charged by wrecker services.
Application fees are established in 47 O.S. § 953
Renewal fees are $250.00 per 47 O.S. 72 § 953 C

Requirements for Licensing
Requirements to apply for a DPS license to operate a wrecker company in the state of Oklahoma can be found in the Oklahoma Administrative Code at 595:25-3-1.

Training
All wrecker vehicle operators must adhere to the training requirements found in Chapter 25 of Title 595 of the Oklahoma Administrative Code.
Each course must be approved by the Department of Public Safety prior to it being accepted as continuing education.
- Types of courses DPS will approve
DPS will only approve course content that is directly related to wrecker vehicle operation, tow and recovery of vehicles, wrecker operator safety, or traffic control.
Administrative functions of a wrecker company will only be approved for continuing education on DPS regulated requirements. Title 42 courses will NOT be approved for continuing education under the administrative functions of a wrecker company.
- Conferences and Seminars
Any wrecker company attending a wrecker or towing conference or seminar must submit the conference’s or seminar’s list of offered classes a minimum of 10 business days prior to the conference or seminar. DPS will post the approved classes on the DPS Training Calendar that will be posted on the DPS website.

- Request for content approval
Before DPS can or will approve a course, the name of the course, the training entity (name of the DPS approved trainer, name of an approved national training entity, etc.), the full content of the classroom (in-person or on-line) course along with a detailed description of any hands-on must be provided to wrecker@dps.ok.gov. The submitted course cannot be used to meet the training requirements until the course has been approved.

- How to become an approved wrecker trainer: If you wish to continue being or become an approved trainer, you will need to submit the Approved Trainer Application and a resume or detailed work history to wrecker@dps.ok.gov. Enter the following in the subject line of the email: APPROVED TRAINER APPLICATION. The application process is as follows:
1. complete and submit the Approved Trainer Application.
2. Submit a resume or bio providing evidence of experience
3. DPS will review and advance or deny the application.
4. After the application is reviewed, DPS will notify the applicant to set up the trainer evaluation.
5. Trainer evaluation The Department may overtly or covertly evaluate any training course on the Wrecker Services Training Calendar. The Trainer evaluation sheet will be used to determine the effectiveness of the training and trainer.
6. The Department reserves the right to revoke approval of any course or approved trainer.
- Approved Trainer requirements:
1. Experience
o Minimum 10 years of consecutive and current documented wrecker operation experience in law enforcement towing/recovery, or
o Minimum of 5 years of consecutive and current documented wrecker operation experience in law enforcement towing/recovery with formalized training certificates (WreckMaster, TRAA, NATA, AAA, ERSCA, etc.)
2. Proficient in the use of computers and audio/visual equipment.
3. Approved trainers are expected to provide audio/visual equipment or make arrangements with the training facility to have functional and working audio/visual equipment available.
4. Provide a minimum of 2 classes per year.
- Trainer Record Keeping
All approved trainers are required to submit a roster of class attendees for each class. The roster must contain the course name, date of instruction, student’s name, 4-digit year of birth (example: 1998, 2005, etc.), and student’s employer name. All information must be legible.
- OJT (On-the-Job) Training
OJT will NOT be accepted in place of the 16-hour basic wrecker operator training course. Every new operator must, under current administrative rule, attend a DPS approved 16-hour basic operator training course or provide a resume showing more than 2 years' experience in traffic incident management, wrecker vehicle recovery controls, connecting or loading vehicle onto wrecker, tie down and secure vehicle to wrecker, and wrecker operation safety. Please note, proposed permanent rules, if approved, will require ALL new wrecker vehicle operators to go through the 16-hour basic operator course.
OJT may be applied to continue education if the OJT is submitted and approved under the same guidelines as listed below in the Wrecker Service Training Calendar.
- Wrecker Service Training Calendar
The Wrecker Service Training Calendar shows all upcoming training classes presented by an approved training instructor and conferences and seminars that have approved classes. National training entities’ training classes/courses will not be posted on the Wrecker Services Training Calendar.
If a class/course is to be used to meet the training requirements established in the administrative rules, approved trainers must submit a request to conduct an approved training course a minimum of 10 business days prior to the date of the class. The request must contain the name of the course, date, time, and location of the class. Notices must be submitted to wrecker@dps.ok.gov. Enter the following in the subject line of the email: TRAINING CALENDAR. Other forms of delivery for a request will not be accepted. NOTE: The Department reserves the right to overtly or covertly observe the class.
If a conference or seminar is requested to be used to meet the training requirements established in the administrative rules, the conference or seminar’s listed class offerings must be submitted to wrecker@dps.ok.gov a minimum of 10 business days prior to the conference or seminar. The conference or seminar will be posted to the Wrecker Service Training Calendar indicating what classes have been approved to meet the training requirements.
- Training Records
All training records shall be maintained for a minimum of 3 years.

Beginning October 1st, 2023, DPS Wrecker Services Division will begin renewing Wrecker Licenses for Calendar Year 2024.
