Falling temperatures overnight could lead to refreezing of slick spots on highways, bridges and ramps. Oklahoma Department of Transportation and Oklahoma Turnpike Authority crews remind drivers to slow down and use caution if traveling in the state overnight. Motorists are cautioned that even if a highway looks clear there still may be ice present. Crews continue monitoring, plowing and sanding operations, particularly in Eastern Oklahoma and Northwestern Oklahoma.
Eastbound I-44/Will Rogers Turnpike continues to have minor snowpack and slick spots on shoulders and ramps between Afton and the Missouri state line.
Crews in the Northwest/Panhandle are treating Beaver, Harper, Woods, Woodward and Major counties for slick spots.
All counties in Northeastern portions of the state, including the Tulsa metro area, are reporting slick spots, especially on rural two-lane highways. Other counties in the East-Central region are reporting slick spots but improving conditions in Lincoln, Pottawatomie, Seminole, Hughes, Okfuskee and the Muskogee area.
Crews are plowing snow-packed highways in Southeastern Oklahoma in LeFlore and McCurtain counties and will continue to do so overnight.
Central Oklahoma including the Oklahoma City metro area crews are reporting clear interstates while others are plowing slush on highways in Noble, Logan and Payne counties. Crews in the OKC metro will remain on standby overnight and ready to treat any developing slick spots.
If drivers must travel they should closely follow the forecast and check current road conditions on the interactive travel map at www.okroads.org or through the Drive Oklahoma mobile app.
REMEMBER during snowy and icy conditions, motorists are asked to:
- Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
- Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
- Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
- Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
NOTE: Additional advisories will be sent from this office as conditions change.
