New I-44/Turner Turnpike frontage road opens today in Stroud; full overnight closure set for Feb. 10 between Stroud, Chandler for bridge removal

Motorists can expect the new, two-way frontage road on the north side of the I-44/Turner Turnpike to open at 5 p.m. today between Old Stroud Rd./N. 3550 Rd. and SH-99/N. Eighth Ave. in Stroud. This is the first frontage road to open along the I-44/Turner Turnpike. 

Drivers should expect these closures Friday through Sunday for the removal of Old Stroud Rd. bridge beams as part of an ongoing $8.3 million construction project: 

  • Eastbound and westbound I-44/Turner Turnpike will be narrowed to one lane in each direction at Old Stroud Rd. bridge, which is between US-377/SH-99 (mm 179) at Stroud and SH-18 (mm 166) at Chandler, from 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, to 6 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, to place barrier wall in preparation for a slight lane shift.
  • Crews will fully close eastbound and westbound I-44/Turner Turnpike between SH-18 (mm 166) at Chandler and US-377/SH-99 (mm 179) at Stroud from 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, through 7 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, for the removal of Old Stroud Rd. bridge beams.
  • Eastbound I-44/Turner Turnpike motorists must exit to SH-18 in Chandler to SH-66 to continue eastbound toward Stroud during the Saturday night closure. Motorists may reenter I-44/Turner Turnpike at the Stroud on-ramp (mm 179) throughout the closure.
  • Westbound I-44/Turner Turnpike motorists must exit at US-377/SH-99 at Stroud to SH-66 westbound to Chandler during the Saturday night closure. Motorists may re-enter I44/Turner Turnpike at the Chandler on-ramp (mm 166) throughout the closure.
  • The Stroud and Chandler service plazas also will be closed during this time.
  • When the closure is complete Sunday morning, I-44/Turner Turnpike will reopen to two lanes in each direction. 

Old Stroud Rd. bridge will be rebuilt to accommodate the future widening of the I-44/Turner Turnpike to six lanes and is expected to reopen to traffic in fall 2024. Local traffic may use the frontage road as a detour during the bridge closure through fall 2024.
