Oklahoma Turnpike Authority Encourages Safe Travel on Labor Day Weekend

Wednesday, August 27, 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Aug. 27, 2014) — The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) is encouraging drivers to travel safely this Labor Day weekend. According to AAA, Labor Day will see a large spike in traffic, with the largest number of road travelers since 2008.

“This year, Labor Day will see a lot of motorists on the roads and highways,” said Tim Stewart, OTA director. “We want to ensure their safety as they share the roadway, and we encourage all travelers to stay focused and alert while driving.”

Due to the expected increased traffic, OTA reminds drivers to practice safe driving, especially on highways. When heading out on their road trip, drivers should:

  • Avoid cell phone use while operating your vehicle. Keeping your eyes on the road creates a safer driving environment.
  • Be cautious and attentive in work zones and always keep your hands on the wheel.
  • Plan trips ahead and allow ample time to reach destinations. Keep water on hand when going out in the heat.
  • Always buckle up.

These safety tips can help turnpike travelers on their way to boating on Grand Lake, getting out to the Labor Day Celebration in Henryetta, enjoying a hike in the Wichita Mountains, or many other Oklahoma destinations this weekend.
