Oklahoma Turnpike Authority Announces Vinita Service Plaza Contract Recipient

Friday, March 15, 2013

TULSA, Okla. (March 25, 2013) – The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) announced Timberlake Construction as the recipient of the Vinita Service Plaza contract in the Authority Meeting, Monday, March 25.

“As travel to and from Oklahoma increases and our state continues to thrive, we want to ensure Turnpike travelers’ needs are met,” said Tim Stewart, Deputy Director of the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority. “We are confident that Timberlake Construction can meet those needs and provide our customers with the best service possible.”

Renovations to the Vinita Service Plaza, formerly known as the Glass House, will begin early this summer and OTA intends for the project to be completed within 365 days. Renovations include plans for enhanced restrooms, two restaurants, a larger convenience store and a gas station with diesel fuel. The project will be completed while the Turnpike remains open for traffic. Patrons’ access to the Turnpike will be impacted as little as possible.

“The Vinita Service Plaza serves as a first and last impression for those entering and leaving our state. Awarding this contract is the initial step in making the necessary improvements to the area,” continued Stewart.

Surrounding areas may expect an increase in customers during construction as tourists and travelers are encouraged to take alternative exits and explore other Oklahoma cities to meet their food and fuel needs. Travelers should note that along the Turnpike from Joplin, Missouri to Tulsa, Oklahoma there are no travel stops after the Vinita Service Plaza closes for updates. Travelers must exit the highway for gas and food.
