Applications open for 2026 Oklahoma Aging Advocacy Leadership Academy

Wednesday, December 17, 2025

OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 17, 2025) – The Oklahoma Aging Advocacy Leadership Academy (OAALA) is accepting applications for its 2026 cohort. For nearly three decades, OAALA and Oklahoma Human Services have provided free training for individuals interested in learning how they can support Oklahoma’s growing aging population.

Participants will learn about the tools and resources available to Oklahoma’s aging population and their caregivers to help them become more effective advocates. Topics like respite, in and out-of-home care options, transportation assistance and Oklahoma Human Services’ Aging Our Way initiative will be discussed.

“The impact OAALA graduates make in Oklahoma communities compliments our agency’s efforts to make services and supports available to older Oklahomans,” said Jeromy Buchanan, Director of Oklahoma Human Services Community Living, Aging and Protective Services division. “Oklahoma Human Services cannot support all the various needs of our state’s aging population alone and we are grateful and proud to serve alongside these engaged leaders and advocates in service to older adults.”

The academy will kick off in February and include classes and coursework through August 2026. Classes will typically meet all day on Wednesdays and Thursdays in Oklahoma City. Three of the sessions will be virtual. Classes are planned to take place on the following dates and are subject to change with as much notice provided to participants as possible:

Kickoff: February 4 – Hosted in person within the Oklahoma City metro area

Session 1: March 11 & 12
Session 2: April 8 & 9
Session 3: May 13 & 14

Session 4: June 17 & 18
Session 5: July 22 & 23
Session 6: Aug 19 & 20

Attendance and participation are required for each full day. There is no cost to participate as tuition, lunch, and learning resources are covered by program sponsors. Participants may qualify for overnight accommodation depending upon the distance they may need to travel to attend in-person classes. Likewise, travel reimbursements may be provided under the State Travel Reimbursement Act.

Applicants should demonstrate a willingness to use constructive advocacy techniques to effect social change and a commitment to building communities that include and value all Oklahomans including aging individuals and those with disabilities. Participants should also demonstrate empathy to those who belong to these demographics.

Applications can be completed online and must be received along with a letter of support by January 4, 2026.
