Momentum Refresh Mobile Restroom, Inclusivity Amenities, to be featured at Oklahoma State Fair

Tuesday, September 10, 2024

Oklahoma City, OK – The Oklahoma State Fair and the Developmental Disabilities Council of Oklahoma are excited to announce Oklahoma’s debut of Momentum Refresh, the nation’s first fully accessible and universally designed mobile restroom. This inclusive amenity is one of several intended to enhance accessibility and create a welcoming environment for all visitors during the Oklahoma State Fair this year from Sept. 12 – 22. Media and the public are invited to an open house that will showcase Momentum Refresh and introduce attendees to two other amenities aimed at enhancing inclusivity – the Calming Space and Sensory Friendly Time.

When: The open house will take place on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024, from 11 a.m. – noon.

Where: The Momentum Refresh Mobile Restroom will be located on The Circle, in front of the Modern Living Building.

Note: A valid Oklahoma State Fair Admission Ticket is required to attend the open house. Any media planning to attend this open house should contact Scott Munz (405-520-3531 or smunz@okstatefair.com) to arrange for complimentary access into the Fair.

The Momentum Refresh Mobile Restroom, the Calming Space, and Sensory Friendly Time, were created with senior citizens, parents with small children, veterans, those who are neurodivergent and individuals with disabilities, in mind.

Momentum Refresh’s mobile restroom provides a comfortable and private space for individuals with disabilities. This innovative space features a motorized platform lift that allows people with mobility limitations to effortlessly access the restroom from the ground level, a powered ceiling hoist to ensure the secure and safe transfer of a person from their wheelchair to the changing table or toilet, a height adjustable powered changing table for individuals of all ages and sizes, and a dedicated team of trained professionals who meticulously clean the space after each use.

"Accessibility is essential for creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone," said Jenifer Randle, Executive Director at the Developmental Disabilities Council of Oklahoma. "We are thrilled to partner with the Oklahoma State Fair to bring the Momentum Refresh Mobile Restroom to Oklahomans.”

The Momentum Refresh Mobile Restroom will be open at the Fair from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. daily and is just one example of the Oklahoma State Fair's commitment to making the annual event accessible for all.

With an understanding that the crowds, sights, and sounds of the Fair can be overstimulating for some, organizers are proud to debut the Calming Space and Sensory Friendly Time.

Located in the Arts Annex and open during regular building hours, the Calming Space will be available to Fairgoers who crave a break from the hustle and bustle of the Fair. This air-conditioned space, designed with comfort in mind, promises to offer tranquility for those who are neurodivergent, including individuals who are on the autism spectrum or have sensory-processing challenges.

Sensory Friendly Time will take place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 22 at various locations throughout the Fair and will feature activities designed for guests who want to experience the joys of the Oklahoma State Fair in an atmosphere that is less noisy and bright. Attractions, show times and additional details about Sensory Friendly Time can be found in the Fair’s 2024 Sensory Friendly Time Guide

“We couldn’t be more proud to bring these amenities to the Oklahoma State Fair, this year, and hopefully, each following year. Too often individuals with disabilities are forced to forgo attending an event due to a lack of accessibility. The Oklahoma State Fair is for everyone, and we are thrilled to take part in a national movement ensuring that public events like ours can accommodate all,” said Gina Burchfiel, Executive Vice President of the Oklahoma State Fair.
