OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 3, 2024) — Oklahoma Human Services today announced DSP+, an initiative to address the statewide shortage of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs).
DSP+ is a joint initiative from Developmental Disabilities Services (DDS); Community Living, Aging and Protective Services (CAP); and the Oklahoma Health Care Authority to meet the needs of all Oklahomans in need of direct support care.
DSPs fill vital roles by providing support and services to people with developmental disabilities, aging Oklahomans, medically fragile individuals, and people with disabilities who are transitioning into the community from care facilities.
“One hurdle to ending the DDS waitlist is ensuring we have enough direct care providers to serve families in need,” said DDS Director Beth Scrutchins. “Addressing this workforce challenge was always part of our strategy to end the wait. DSP+ provides a much-needed incentive to help independent provider agencies to recruit, retain and reward care providers for our state’s most vulnerable populations.”
DSP+ provides a $1,000 recruitment incentive for new DSPs, a $1,000 retention incentive for existing workers, and $1,000 retention incentive every six months through Jan. 31, 2025. Both the provider agency and DSP must be enrolled in DSP+ to reap the rewards.
“Enrollment for DSP+ is now open and the program officially launches Feb. 1,” said CAP Director Jeromy Buchanan. “If you’re looking for a meaningful career, become a DSP at a participating provider agency to enjoy the full benefits of DSP+.”
DSPs serve as direct care providers meeting the needs of individuals within a family home, the individual’s home, or in combination with residential support.
“DSPs help with developing and maintaining the individual’s skills to ensure health, safety, community integration and other daily activities,” said State Medicaid Director Traylor Rains. “We hope this incentive helps to recruit compassionate care providers who will support Oklahomans in need.”
