Social protections and antidiscrimination measures for transgender individuals and other vulnerable populations immigrating to the United States will be discussed at the Practice & Policy Lecture Series presented by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) on March 12, 2019 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive in Oklahoma City.

The Experiences of Asylum Seekers Outside the Gender Binary will be presented by licensed health service psychologist Dr. Lisa Frey, Professor Emeritus of Counseling Psychology at the University of Oklahoma. She is also a faculty member in the Women's and Gender Studies program and an affiliate faculty member in the Center for Social Justice.

Frey has presented nationally on her research and clinical work related to gender identity and sexual orientation; issues of violence, especially sexual abuse and assault; at-risk youth, including adolescent females who have been sexually abused; and relational cultural theory. The lecture will also include discussion of legal protections, mental health assessment and treatment, job training, and education services for asylum seekers to the United States.

The Practice & Policy Lecture Series has been developed to provide thought-provoking presentations on Oklahoma's emerging policy issues, trends and best practices. The series is sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Office of Performance Outcomes and Accountability and the University of Oklahoma Center for Public Management. The goal of the series is to provide the best educational opportunities available in a forum that offers participants an opportunity to question, share and learn.

All lectures are free and open to the public. DHS staff can receive training credit for this event and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for social workers.
