DHS Practice & Policy Lecture Series will focus on human trafficking

Human trafficking is often referred to as modern-day slavery. Millions of women, children, and men worldwide are forced into bonded labor, forced migration and organ and sex trafficking.
“Human Trafficking: Information and Prevention” will be the topic of the January Practice and Policy Lecture Series presented by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive in Oklahoma City. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Dr. Roksana Alavi will discuss the character, scope, causes and response to human trafficking and discuss successful strategies communities and individuals may consider to combat the problem. Alavi is an assistant professor of Interdisciplinary Studies in the College of Continuing Education and Professional Studies at the University of Oklahoma where she teaches courses on leadership ethics, women in leadership and the philosophy of race. She is also an affiliate faculty at the Women and Gender Studies Program at the Center for Social Justice and the Iranian Studies Program at OU’s College of International Studies. She received her Ph.D. in Philosophy in 2008 from the University of Kansas. She recently edited a book on ethics and leadership that was published in 2016 and has a book under contract entitled, “Iranian Identity, American Existence.” Alavi currently serves on the editorial board of Sage Guidebook on Human Trafficking and on the Oklahoma Attorney General’s task force on human trafficking.

The Practice & Policy Lecture Series has been developed to provide thought-provoking presentations on Oklahoma's emerging policy issues, trends and best practices. The series is sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) Office of Performance Outcomes and Accountability (OPOA) and the University of Oklahoma Center for Public Management with the goal of providing the best educational opportunities available in a forum that offers participants an opportunity to question, share and learn from each other.

DHS staff can receive training credit for this event. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for social workers.
