DHS Tribal Affairs Liaison named to 2018 class of Leadership Native Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) Tribal Affairs Liaison, Carmin Tecumseh-Williams, has been named to the 2018 class of Leadership Native Oklahoma (LNO) by the American Indian Chamber of Commerce Oklahoma (AICCO). LNO provides opportunities for American Indian business, community and government leaders to network and promote self-governance and self-determination of tribal nations and enhance the success of all American Indian people. Seven monthly sessions focused on team-building and information are offered to participants as well as a two-day “Indianpreneurship” course dedicated to supporting and advocating for American Indian business enterprises.
“I’m so honored to be part of this class,” said Tecumseh-Williams, a member of the Muscogee-Creek tribe. “Our goal is to help improve the future of Indian communities in Oklahoma. It’s so important for us as Indian people to not only work together, but also share our tribal perspectives with non-native communities on a range of issues including economic and social needs as well as nurturing and respecting the cultural and tribal traditions of all Indian nations in our state.”

Tecumseh-Williams has worked in child welfare for more than 25 years and was named DHS tribal affairs liaison in 2016. She has served tribal families throughout her career and is a past president of the Oklahoma Indian Child Welfare Association. A native of Henryetta, Tecumseh-Williams earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Northeastern Oklahoma State University and a master’s degree in human relations from the University of Oklahoma.
