The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) recently received approval to offer education and training to veterans participating in an on-the-job training program for child welfare specialist positions. Training leads to full qualification of the individual for the job title pursued.
DHS Human Resource Management Employment Services worked with the Oklahoma State Accrediting Agency (SAA) to provide information about child welfare specialist positions. Veterans hired by approved agencies are able to access their G.I. Bill® education benefits while completing classroom instruction, undergoing supervised on-the-job training, and working fulltime. A signed training agreement between DHS and the trainee is required by the U.S. Veterans Administration.
“This was a rigorous application process,” said DHS Human Resource Manager Tamara Steele. “We are so pleased that DHS can participate in this program to help veterans use their G.I. Bill® benefits to pursue a career in child welfare.”
The first veteran participant in the program is Kris Biddle from Sequoyah County. Biddle inquired about the program after being hired by DHS and the agency began the process to determine what requirements were needed to become an approved agency.
