Meeting the career needs of low-income, low-skilled workers and their employers is one of the great challenges of the 21st century.  Career pathway strategies have emerged as a successful approach to meeting those needs, but the challenge remains on how to replicate them on a large scale for this growing segment of the workforce.

“Transforming U.S. Workforce Development Policies for the 21st Century” is the topic of the next installment of the Spring Lecture Series.  Presented by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS), the lecture will be held Tuesday, Feb. 9 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Dr. in Oklahoma City.  All lectures are free and open to the public.

Guest speaker will be Dr. Christopher King, a lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin’s Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs.  King’s presentation will present a framework for understanding the challenges faced by low-income and low-skilled workers, and options for appropriate policy and practice innovations.

Other lectures in the spring series include a look at suicide prevention in Oklahoma, as suicide is the second-leading cause of death for Oklahomans between the ages of 10 and 35.  Look for that lecture on March 23.  A complete list of spring lecture topics is available on the DHS website.

The Practice and Policy Lecture Series has been developed to provide thought-provoking presentations on Oklahoma's emerging policy issues, trends and best practices. The series is sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Office of Planning, Research and Statistics, the University of Oklahoma Center for Public Management and the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City with the goal of providing the best educational opportunities available in a forum that offers participants an opportunity to question, share and learn from each other.  Register to attend by phoning (405) 521-3552.
