Oklahoma’s suicide rate is nearly twice the national average for people age 25-64. And in the 10-35 age group, suicide is the state’s second-leading cause of death. Now the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) takes an in-depth look at the scope of suicide in Oklahoma.
“Suicide Prevention in Oklahoma” is the topic of the next installment of the Spring Lecture Series. Presented by the DHS, the lecture will be held Wednesday, March 23 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Dr. in Oklahoma City. All lectures are free and open to the public.
Guest speaker will be Savannah Kalman, Prevention Program Manager for the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS). Kalman will look at what agencies like DHS and ODMHSAS are doing to reduce deaths and attempts of suicide. Participants will leave knowing more about the scope of suicide in Oklahoma and the many ways to get involved in helping prevent suicide.
The Practice and Policy Lecture Series has been developed to provide thought-provoking presentations on Oklahoma's emerging policy issues, trends and best practices. The series is sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Office of Planning, Research and Statistics and the University of Oklahoma Center for Public Management with the goal of providing the best educational opportunities available in a forum that offers participants an opportunity to question, share and learn from each other.
