The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) Region II foster care recruitment team attended the Norman Earth Day Festival on April 24, 2016. The team was there to raise awareness for foster care and adoption and recruiting new foster and adoptive homes. The team also made efforts to support and improve their local community by teaching children about using biodegradable items to plant seeds in to help save and improve the environment.

The recruitment team received eight inquiries about becoming a foster parent from the Earth Day event. Since the beginning of the year, the team has opened 14 new foster homes and has 68 families who are currently at some stage of the approval process. However, there are currently over 10,000 children in foster care in Oklahoma. There is a statewide goal to recruit 1,000 new foster families by the end of June, 2016. DHS still needs more foster parents. We need people who are open-minded and will foster teens, kids with developmental disabilities and sibling groups. Those are generally the groups that are hardest to place. Please consider getting involved in foster care today. You can forever change a child’s life.
