April DHS lecture examines Oklahoma’s affordable housing

Moderate to low income Oklahomans have significant affordable housing needs.  Now the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) is taking a look at the demand and cost of housing for these families and individuals.

  “Oklahoma’s Affordable Housing Study” is the topic in the next installment of the Spring Lecture Series.  Presented by DHS, the lecture will be held Thursday, April 21 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Dr. in Oklahoma City.  All lectures are free and open to the public.

Guest speakers include Dawn Jourdan, a land use attorney and city planner who will discuss research on homelessness, disaster resiliency and fair housing.  Byron DeBruler has a background in working with the Oklahoma Housing Finance Agency and the state Department of Commerce, among others.  He will facilitate group discussion and share hazards of lead-based paint.  David Puckett, Project Team Leadat Integra Realty Resources will talk specifically about the state’s housing needs.

The Oklahoma Real Estate Commission has approved this particular event for one hour of credit as a “HOT Topic” through the Central Oklahoma Commercial Association of Realtors.

The final lecture in the spring series, “Infant Mental Health,” will be held May 10 and discusses the societal costs of child welfare involvement for infants and toddlers.The Practice and Policy Lecture Series has been developed to provide thought-provoking presentations on Oklahoma's emerging policy issues, trends and best practices. The series is sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Office of Planning, Research and Statistics and the University of Oklahoma Center for Public Management with the goal of providing the best educational opportunities available in a forum that offers participants an opportunity to question, share and learn from each other.  Register to attend by phoning (405) 521-3552.
