OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) Developmental Disabilities Services (DDS) held its 29th Annual Governor’s Conference on Developmental Disabilities recently in Norman. During the awards ceremony, DDS recognized Home of Hope House Manager Buffy Reliford of Claremore, Okla., with an “Award of Excellence” in direct support services.
Home of Hope Supervisor Michelle Warren nominated Reliford for the prestigious award. Reliford provides services for Dale, an individual with developmental disabilities. Warren describes Reliford as a leader, an advocate, special-event planner and one of the agency’s “go-to girls” when medical issues arise.
“You don’t have to ask for things to be done, Buffy takes the responsibility on all on her own,” Warren said. “She communicates well with all team members, especially her staff when any changes in schedule or health-related matters have been made. She has also been instrumental in teaching and maintaining the instruction of life skills to the individual she serves and with her help, Dale can now perform basic day-to-day tasks that were not possible before working with her.”
She said Reliford often takes Dale with her when she attends events when she isn’t working and she plans outings, including birthday parties, bowling, church and dinners out for her individuals because she believes that the individuals she serves are a valuable part of the community.
“Buffy is also always available for emergency situations, making many trips to the hospital and doctor during off-hours and oftentimes early in the morning,” Warren said. “She teaches exercise classes to the individuals on a bi-weekly basis and also serves as an advocate for a separate agency.”
A direct support service professional is someone who works as a direct care worker for individuals with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities. These workers can include habilitation training specialists, job coaches and group home staff, as well as workshop staff, agency companions and specialized foster parents.
The theme for this year’s Governor’s conference was “A Journey to a Good Life.” It reflects the understanding that approximately 60,000 Oklahomans with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities and their families are searching daily for answers before making important decisions that will affect their future.
Oklahoma DDS Director JoAnne Goin said the criteria for winning an “Award of Excellence” focuses on nominees’ tenure, experience and their relationship to the individual(s) and the families they support. Additional skills in leadership, advocacy and their success in supporting people to be included in the community are also considered.
“Our award winners say they absolutely cherish the people they serve,” Goin said. “Direct support professionals are practical, determined and compassionate support staff who treat their individuals like dear friends and family, all the while encouraging and teaching them how to become more independent members in the communities where they work and live.”
