Oklahoma City—The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) kicks off the first of the season’s Practice and Policy Lecture Series with “It’s Not OK to Fall: Strategies for Preventing Falls in Oklahoma.” It will be held Tuesday, August 25 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Dr. in Oklahoma City. All lectures are free and open to the public.
Statistics show 13 percent of the population is made up of adults 65 years of age and older, and they account for three-fourths of all deaths caused by falls. Additionally, about 40 percent of this age group falls at least once a year, and one in 40 of those falls will result in a hospital visit.
Dr. Laurence Rubenstein will be guest lecturer. He is well known in the medical field for his research on fall prevention in the geriatric population. He is an active health services researcher and the author of over 330 scientific publications. Rubenstein is currently professor and chairman of the Donald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatric Medicine of the OU College of Medicine.
The Practice and Policy Lecture Series has been developed to provide thought-provoking presentations on Oklahoma's emerging policy issues, trends and best practices. The series is sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Office of Planning, Research and Statistics and the University of Oklahoma Center for Public Management with the goal of providing the best educational opportunities available in a forum that offers participants an opportunity to question, share and learn from each other.
