Billy and Toni always knew they wanted to foster and adopt a child. After having a foster child, Sammie, in their home for only a few days they knew they wanted to adopt her.

On Oct. 13, 2015, Sammie’s adoption was finalized.  The adoption gave her the family she always dreamed of only five months before her 18th birthday.

“This is the family I have always wanted,” Sammie said. “I will always have someone no matter what, they will love me unconditionally.”

The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) surpassed the adoption goal for state fiscal year 2015. During this time, DHS found a permanent home through adoption for 2,015 children statewide. DHS and Oklahoma County judges coordinated their efforts and made adoption finalizations a major priority for the children in DHS custody.

“The judges in Oklahoma county made a joint effort with DHS and together worked very hard to get permanent homes for the children who did not have them yet, and our efforts have made a dramatic difference,” said Judge Lisa Davis.

Teenagers are among the hardest group to find foster and adoptive families for. To people who are interested in becoming foster parents, Sammie says, “Just try it! Give your love and support to children who desperately need it.”

“As a foster or adoptive parent, remember that you are getting the opportunity to have a positive influence on a child,” Toni said. “Do not let fear of the unknown from what kind of past they have keep you from helping. Remember, you are influencing their future.”

Sammie says for someone who spent a lot of time in foster care, there is nothing like knowing that you have a “forever home.”
