OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Midwest City office of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) recently participated in a very successful school supply drive to help students who attend Crutcho schools.Staff from Child Support Services (CSS) invited their colleagues from Adult and Family Services (AFS) and Child Welfare Services (CWS) to join them in their effort to help local school children get a good start to the new school year.
“We held an event called 'Cram the Van' at the local Wal-Mart,” said James Sumner, AFS Administrative Assistant. “Staff decorated the boxes to drop supplies in, helped load the supplies and then delivered them to the schools.”
Through this collaborative effort between DHS service areas, staff filled up three vehicles with 1,165 items including folders, spiral notebooks, chalk, pencils, pens, erasers, glue, crayons, backpacks, hand sanitizers and highlighters.
“Giving back to the local community is a life-changer for some people,” said Sumner. “When you provide school supplies to a child who would not otherwise have them – or give teachers a pause to breathe because they don’t have to worry about where they will get pencils, markers, paper, backpacks, and other items for their students – it lets the community know that DHS isn’t just providing services, but that we are providing hope and a future for children in our areas. We can’t change the whole world today, but we can change the life of these children in this school right now."
