OKLAHOMA CITY -- Sixteen individuals from across the state, five employers and two prominent media outlets were honored recently during the annual “Governor’s Disability Employment Awards of Excellence” held at the Phillips Pavilion on the grounds of the Governor’s Mansion in Oklahoma City. KOCO-TV Channel 5 Anchor Paul Folger emceed the event.

Originally created by former Governor and First Lady George and Donna Nigh 29 years ago, the awards recognize individuals with disabilities, media outlets that cover disability employment news and businesses based on the efforts they have demonstrated to help employees with disabilities succeed and their efforts to encourage other businesses to hire people with disabilities.

One of this year’s winners included Tulsa’s AMG Cleaning Concepts, Inc. The company was nominated for the award by Bios Corporation Job Coach Marlene Barger and she accepted the award presented by Oklahoma Secretary of State Chris Benge and Oklahoma Department of Human Services Director Ed Lake.

Barger said AMG Cleaning Concepts, Inc. is owned by Tony Greene, a cleaning contractor for such companies as Mathis Brothers in Tulsa and other prominent local businesses.

“AMG Cleaning Concepts Inc. is well-known for providing work opportunities for people with disabilities,” Barger said. “I believe the company should receive this award because Bios Corporation has had a continuous working relationship with Tony Greene and his company since 2011. Tony was willing to contract with our team, various individuals with disabilities and work with our job coaches.”

She said the cleaning company provides a variety of services, including vacuuming, mopping, spot-cleaning restrooms, glass windows/doors, polishing furniture/fixtures and handling trash disposal.

“Tony Greene also recently approached us about providing a team to clean the new Ashley Furniture Store in Owasso, Oklahoma,” Barger said. “We sent an individual and a job coach and they’ve been working there since April. In June, we sent another team to the new Ashley Furniture Store in Tulsa Hills and there are still more work opportunities to come for people with disabilities.”

The Governor’s Disability Employment Awards of Excellence competition and program is co-sponsored by the Governor’s Office, the Oklahoma DHS Developmental Disabilities Services, the Oklahoma DRS and the Oklahoma Association of People Supporting EmploymentFirst. Award winners are annually selected by a panel of public servants and volunteers that either serve people with disabilities or who represent organizations that provide direct-care support for them daily.
