OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) commemorates November as “National Adoption Awareness Month.”  Several statewide adoption celebrations will take place throughout the month of November.

“Right now nearly 400 children are waiting for a family,” said Deborah Goodman, DHS Programs Administrator.  “Some are older children who may be close to aging-out of the system and many are part of a sibling group, but they still yearn for a life-long family.  We hope more Oklahomans will consider becoming adoptive parents and provide a loving home to these children.”

During the last fiscal year, DHS SWIFT Adoption Services found safe, loving homes for more than 1,300 children.  “Oklahomans are so generous and willing to step up and help out,” Goodman said.  “But we still need more people who will consider becoming adoptive parents and providing a permanent home for these kids.”

The public is invited to attend the following Adoption Day celebrations and learn more about how the adoption process works.

The first event begins at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 17th at the Cleveland County Courthouse in Norman.  The second event will be held Friday, Nov. 21 at 9 a.m. at the Canadian County Courthouse in El Reno.

Another adoption celebration will be held Saturday, Nov. 22 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Broken Arrow First Baptist Church in Broken Arrow.

The final event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26 at the Oklahoma City Zoo.
