OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) Aging Services is preparing to award capital assistance grants from the Federal Transit Administration. The grant funds are awarded in the form of vehicles (capital assistance) to private, non-profit applicants providing specialized public transportation services to elderly individuals and individuals with disabilities.

The total amount of funds available for federal fiscal year 2014 is $2,374,283. Up to $1,321,740 is designated for rural projects, $761,490 for large urban projects in the Oklahoma City area, and $291,053 for small urban projects in Lawton and Norman, OK.

Eligible applicants must be one of the following: a private non-profit corporation or association; a Native American tribe; a public body, including city or county governments approved by the state to coordinate services for elderly and persons with disabilities; or a public body that certifies to the Governor that no non-profit corporations or associations are readily available in the area to meet the special needs of the elderly and persons with disabilities.

Eligible entities must submit an application which includes a program narrative in essay form explaining the program’s objectives and a budget. Selected applicants must provide 15 percent in matching funds for ADA-accessible vehicles or 20 percent in matching funds for non-ADA equipped vehicles. Match funds cannot include FTA funds.

Grant applications are accepted throughout the year. There is no closing date for receipt of an application. Applications not received in time for the current funding cycle will be carried over until the next funding cycle.
