OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Black Heritage Committee, sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) Office for Civil Rights, is calling for nominations for three awards which will be presented at the 29th Annual Black Heritage Celebration on Feb. 18, 2014. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Metro Technology Center, 1900 Springlake Drive in Oklahoma City.

The theme of this year's celebration is Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

The event is a partnership between the DHS Office for Civil Rights, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, and the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Three awards will be presented.

The Meritorious Service Award will be presented to a DHS employee who has exhibited outstanding contributions to the agency and the community. 

The Trailblazer Award will be given to the person the Black Heritage Committee defines as "going where no man or woman has gone before." 

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to the person whose contributions to Oklahoma and/or the nation have been remarkable.  

All nominations, including a description of why the nominee should be selected, should be emailed to Peggy.Carter@doc.state.ok.us. The nominations must be received no later than noon on Dec. 18, 2013.
