OKDHS adds additional lecture to fall series targeting domestic violence

OKLAHOMA CITY-- October is “Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” and the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) is tackling the issue head-on in its Fall Lecture Series. “Domestic Violence: The Problem, The Resources and OKDHS’ Response” will be held from Noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, October 25 in the Governor’s Blue Room at the Oklahoma State Capitol.
Oklahoma’s pervasive problem of domestic violence will be explored, and a panel of experts will discuss ways of understanding and responding to families who face this situation.
The latest statistics and trends on domestic violence in Oklahoma will be presented, as well as community services available for both victims and perpetrators. Additionally, OKDHS will present information on its Domestic Violence Task Force, and how the agency has developed an education and awareness campaign for customers and co-workers.
Guest speakers include Marcia Smith, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault; Brandon Pasley, Program Manager, Oklahoma Address Confidentiality Program in the Victim’s Services Unit, Office of the Attorney General; Jackie Steyn, Chief Programs and Compliance Officer, YWCA of Oklahoma City, and Victoria Harrison, Assistant Director for Quality, Oklahoma Child Support Services.
The Practice and Policy Lecture Series has been developed to provide thought-provoking presentations on Oklahoma's emerging policy issues, trends and best practices. The series is sponsored by the OKDHS Office of Planning, Research and Statistics and the University of Oklahoma Center for Public Management with the goal of providing the best educational opportunities available in a forum that offers participants an opportunity to question, share and learn.
