OKLAHOMA CAPITOL – Parents all over the state have been scurrying to get their children ready for school, buying the supplies and clothing needed to make it through the school year. Children are anxious, too, wondering what this year will be like.

For parents who are not together, helping with child support is one way that their children can get what they need for school and every day. By providing regular, dependable support, parents not only ensure that their children will have the essentials they need for school, they are also letting their children know that both parents care and are involved in helping meet their needs.

Children benefit from child support in other ways, too. Studies have shown that children who receive regular, dependable support are:

  • More likely to succeed in life
  • More likely to finish high school
  • More likely to go to college
  • More likely to have high self-esteem
  • More likely to be healthier, happier adults
  • More likely to themselves have a stable marriage someday

Oklahoma taxpayers also benefit when both parents financially support their children.

“When parents take responsibility for their children, families have less need to turn to the state for support,” said Jeff Wagner, a spokesperson for OCSS. “Child support, when regularly paid, reduces reliance on public assistance.”

August is National Child Support Awareness Month, and Oklahoma Child Support Services salutes all parents around the state who are doing their part. OCSS has 42 offices across Oklahoma and works with both parents in a child support case to establish, monitor, and enforce reliable support while encouraging self-sufficiency and strengthening relationships.

Oklahoma Child Support Services is a division of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. To promote healthy families, OCSS establishes, monitors and enforces reliable support while encouraging self-sufficiency and strengthening relationships. The division is responsible for more than 201,000 active child support cases, processing over $339 million in child support collections last year on behalf of children and families.
