OKLAHOMA CAPITOL -- The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) today issued it’s 2011 Annual Report, and cited several Oklahomans for overcoming obstacles and finding success through OKDHS programs.
The report, entitled “Hope for Oklahoma,” featured Tulsa resident Jo Sawyer. As a long-term client of OKDHS’ ADvantage Waiver Program, Sawyer maintains an active lifestyle, as well as her independence.
“I was one of the original people to get on the ADvantage program,” Sawyer says. “It gives me the advantage of living my life free, and if it wasn’t for DHS, I don’t know where I would be.”
One of the benefits of the ADvantage program is that it allows Oklahomans like Sawyer to remain in their own home, rather than a nursing facility—which results in substantial savings. During state fiscal year 2011, taxpayers saved an estimated $300 million through the ADvantage program. The daily cost for Sawyer under ADvantage is roughly $33 per day, compared to more than $100 per day if she was to reside in a nursing home.
Last year the ADvantage Waiver/Personal Care Programs helped a record 25,221 seniors and individuals with disabilities. Program participation has nearly doubled in the past nine years. These programs serve people in their homes, even though they may be medically and financially eligible for nursing facility care.
Growing up in the Depression, Sawyer admits she has seen some hard times. “When I was growing up I never had all the advantages I have today. And I’m grateful for it. I thank the Good Lord up above for a lot of it, and if you don’t have a good attitude on life you’re not going to get anywhere,” Sawyer added.
Through the 2011 Annual Report, see how Oklahomans were served by the OKDHS. As the OKDHS enters into its 75th year, the agency’s mission has not changed: to help Oklahoma’s families lead safer, healthier and more productive lives.
A video documentary introduces a few of those Oklahomans and tells how OKDHS is serving greater numbers of families and individuals than ever before.
